Niagara’s regional and local councils ‘united’ in protection efforts against U.S. tariffs

“It has become clear that our country is entering a new economic reality that will be marked by uncertainty,” a joint statement released by Niagara’s regional and local councils said.

Niagara’s regional and local councils say they’re “united in supporting and advocating for local businesses and workers” in the fight against U.S. tariffs, according to a joint statement released Mar. 4.

“Here in Niagara, our traditionally close ties with our American neighbours, our strong tourism and manufacturing industries, and our identity as a border community all means that we will feel the effects of these taxes in a unique way,” the joint statement said.

The statement was released by Niagara’s Region Chair Jim Bradley and the mayors of West Lincoln, Welland, Niagara Falls, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Lincoln, Wainfleet, Grimsby, Pelham, Fort Erie, St. Catharines, Port Colborne and Thorold.

“It has become clear that our country is entering a new economic reality that will be marked by uncertainty,” the statement said.

Councils and staff will continue to work with their chambers of commerce and other business organizations to “advocate for supports that meet the unique needs of Niagara’s economy,” according to the statement.

Work will also continue with State of New York counterparts to develop “joint advocacy efforts.”

This will include working with Border Mayors Alliance and the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative.

“While we pursue every avenue we can locally, we must recognize that the true, long-term solution to these issues can only come through the continued diplomatic efforts of our Federal government,” the statement said.

“Throughout this uncertainty, we must not lose site of the remarkable resilience that defines Niagara as a community,” it added.
